As the street became more sophisticated so did Simply Tops and several years ago the little shop moved further along the street into bigger premises. “For years we would sit and watch our dining patrons order their fish and chips then go next door to the Australian for a cold beer or glass of wine“ says Christos, “so when the opportunity presented itself we decided to move premises and capture that market for ourselves”. Today, Simply Tops Seafood Bar is fully licensed and has a café feel where people can sit and enjoy a nice evening on the deck with their family and a cold beer or glass of wine.
The move to the new location was a big decision for the family business.
Christos has recently taken back control of the shop and gone back to the basic offerings that made Simply Tops so popular for many years. Great food, good prices, and friendly service are the cornerstone of the business.
The new Simply Tops format has attracted new customers, young and old, but the family business still prides itself on maintaining their loyal following and on many occasions can cater for up to three generations of the same family.
Reputation is very important to the Gatis family who are proud of their history in the heart of Townsville’s restaurant precinct. “It is a labour of love. We are very particular and work hard to prepare the best seafood and create a relaxed, inviting ambience everyone can enjoy. It is more of a lifestyle than a job“.
More than just a fish and chip shop, Simply Tops is located on the roundabout in the heart of Palmer Street and sports a large deck overlooking the moored boats on the river.
